The University of Alabama is teaming up with Shelton State Community College in the Battery Workforce Challenge. The 83-member team of students, ranging from undergraduate to doctorate, are led by faculty members that hold many years of academic and industry experience.
Mission
The University of Alabama & Shelton State Community College BattChallenge team’s mission is to support transportation electrification by educating and training a talented team of engineers, technicians and leaders and provide them with real-world, hands-on experiences.
Goals
The University of Alabama & Shelton State Community College's BattChallenge year two goals include:
- Utilize effective communication pipelines between different parts of the team.
- Have a working module and battery-disconnect unit that are able to exceed the provided key-performance indicators.
- Utilize industry-standard planning and engineering tools to prepare BattChallenge members for the workforce.

The University of Alabama & Shelton State Community College BattChallenge team actively seeks team members to contribute to its swimlanes in the areas of battery pack hardware and software, vehicle systems integration and project management. Those interested in joining the crew are encouraged to complete an interest form or contact the team’s project manager Jonathan Bower, at jcbower@crimson.ua.edu or recruitment lead, Jade Cartolano, at jacartolano@crimson.ua.edu.
Below are a list of weekly team lead and swimlane meetings. All take place at The University of Alabama’s Hardaway Hall, room 160, 401 7th Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
Weekly Meetings:
- Team leads: Mondays
- Battery Pack Hardware: Mondays at 5:30 p.m.
- Battery Pack Software: Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.
- Vehicle Systems Integration: Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
- Project Management: Sundays at 12:30 p.m.
