Bridging Knowledge Gaps: The Significance of Sponsor Collaboration in CAV Education

To inaugurate the Fall Workshop, the EcoCAR EV Challenge invited university Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAVs) Subteam Leads to participate in a comprehensive day of pre-workshop CAVs sessions at MathWorks. This workshop session facilitated direct engagement with industry experts from General Motors, MathWorks, dSPACE, NXP, and Argonne National Laboratory.

The day commenced with an AUTERA Software Deployment session led by West Virginia University EcoCAR alumnus Zachary Flanigan from dSPACE. This session provided students with deployment strategies and best practices for the dSPACE AUTERA system. Additionally, dSPACE trainers offered support regarding the teams’ AUTERA hardware and cybersecurity implementation within RTMaps.

Students then participated in an open Troubleshooting Lab Session, featuring insights from AVTC alumni and current competition sponsors: Jake McGrory from General Motors, Chris Manning from dSPACE, Sam Reinsel from MathWorks, Landon Haugh from NXP, and Priyash Misra from Argonne. The sponsors collaborated to provide guidance on various hardware and software applications, including the Cohda OBU Radio, MATLAB and Simulink, and NavQPlus.

This training session exemplifies the EcoCAR mission of promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. By bringing together students and sponsors, participants gained a holistic understanding of how diverse elements converge to create a fully functional CAV system.

In an era where technology is paramount, these workshops play a vital role in preparing the next generation of automotive engineers and innovators to navigate the challenges and opportunities of connected and automated vehicle technologies.
