For students traveling from across North America, the big day is finally here. It’s officially Day 1 of the EcoCAR 3 Final Competition. Four years ago, we challenged 16 schools to transform a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid electric vehicle. To win, they need to optimize energy efficiency, performance, safety and consumer acceptability while keeping an eye on innovation and cost.
Arriving to competition is a huge achievement, but they haven’t crossed the finish line just yet. While in Yuma, Arizona, they’ll be in the garage fine-tuning engines and retesting coolant loops. They’ll be on the track, evaluating the vehicle’s 0-60 pickup and its emissions output.
Next, they’ll head to the Los Angeles area where they’ll showcase their vehicles during over-the-road and ride-and-drive events. Here they will also participate in the EcoCAR 3 Year 4 Track Day and will prep for final presentations delivered to judges representing the industry, government and academia.
