Where Are They Now: UWAFT’s Chris Shum

Meet Chris Shum, the latest University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT) Hall of Fame Inductee. Chris is an enthusiastic and charismatic Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition Alumni who was a member of the UWAFT team for all three years of Eco-Car: The Next Challenge. During his three-year tenure, Chris began doing Model Development and Simulation in 2008 and finished his exciting journey as a member of the Controls team during the integrated phase. Chris said he enjoyed the “hands-on experience using all hardware and software tools that most employers look for in graduates from this program.”

UWAFT 1

The most valuable experience that Chris gained from EcoCAR: The Next Challenge was understanding of Model-Based Design in the Automotive industry. The valuable experiences and knowledge gained from the AVTC program has helped Chris to get to where he is now. Chris is currently working at the University of Waterloo supporting two research groups (The Motion Research Group and the Smart and Electric Hybrid Vehicle Systems lab) which focuses on automotive simulation and control optimization, respectively.

Although Chris has graduated from the AVTC program, UWAFT is still fortunate to have Chris working at the University of Waterloo. Chris is only steps away from the garage and provides valuable experience, mentorship, and knowledge on a regular basis to the current UWAFT members.
