About The Competition
The Battery Workforce Challenge Year 1 Competition was held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago from May 6-9.
For the year-end finale, BattChallenge teams showcased their battery know-how learned in the first year of the three-year competition to industry sponsors and judges across each of the key the areas of the program, including engineering and project management.
Competition events included welcome remarks, Battery Expo, Team Appreciation Night, a Faculty Recognition dinner, Sponsor Social Networking and Recruitment event and the Awards Ceremony.

Competition Judged Technical Presentations
Best Winter Workshop Technical Design Review Presentation:
Recognizes the team that demonstrates exceptional skill in technical design and planning during the Winter Workshop. The winning presentation shows clear, innovative and feasible battery pack integration strategies for Stellantis' Ram ProMaster, supported by robust analysis and design rationale.
Best and Runner-Up Winter Workshop Mid-Year Team Status Presentations:
Honors the team that excels in presenting its project. This team provides a concise introduction and a clear mission statement for the Battery Workforce Challenge collegiate competition, while showcasing exemplary project management skills through detailed methodology selection, effective status reporting, communication strategies and problem-solving capabilities, ensuring successful project execution.
Best Competition Final Project Review Presentation:
Honors the team that demonstrates exceptional proficiency in delivering its project review presentation, embodying industry-simulated boardroom status updates. This accolade acknowledges the crew's adeptness in providing a clear overview, adhering to specified formats and procedures, effectively communicating project objectives and status, and showcasing comprehensive planning and problem-solving strategies, ensuring a professional and engaging presentation experience.
Best Competition Team Battery Expo:
Celebrates the team that demonstrates outstanding creativity, technical prowess and effective communication in its Battery Expo deliverable. This accolade recognizes the team's ability to craft a compelling design brief, translate it into a tangible mockup of the vehicle's cabin, and showcase technical progress in battery design through a low-voltage demonstration, which captivates both judges and spectators with innovative approaches and attention to detail.
Best Competition Final Technical Review:
Goes to the team that provides the most thorough and critical final technical review, demonstrating a deep understanding of their design, integration challenges and solutions. This review was marked by comprehensive design overview, detailed requirements capture, and clear future development plans.
Best Competition Cell Characterization:
Recognizes the team that excels in cell characterization, showing outstanding accuracy, precision, and execution in measuring and analyzing battery cell performance. This award highlights the team's technical expertise and contribution to executing cell characterization for future pack algorithm development.
Engineering
Overall Engineering Management:
Awards the engineering manager that has exemplified exceptional engineering management across the first year of the competition. This includes technical planning, execution and management. This engineering manager demonstrates outstanding leadership, technical skill and an ability to overcome complex engineering and logistical challenges.
Most Comprehensive Facilities Binder – Year 1 Requirements:
Honors the team with the most detailed and organizes facilities binder that meets or exceeds the year one competition requirements. This binder effectively documents the team's resources, processes, and compliance with safety and operational standards.
Most Creative Technical Design Check-In:
Recognizes the team that presents the most innovative approach during its technical design check-in, showcasing creativity in problem-solving, design optimization and integration strategies for its battery pack.
Best Cell Characterization Test Plan:
Awards the team with the most thorough and well-structured test plan for cell characterization, demonstrating a robust understanding of testing methodologies, equipment setup and safety considerations.
Best and Runner-Up Cell Characterization Analysis Report:
Awards the teams that deliver the most comprehensive and insightful analysis reports on cell characterization, demonstrating exceptional ability in data interpretation and technical accuracy.
Best SME Design Deep Dive:
Awards the team that demonstrates outstanding engagement and responsiveness in its design deep-dive session while interacting with subject-matter experts. Awarded for showcasing in-depth technical knowledge, innovative solutions and a strong ability to articulate complex engineering concepts.
Project Management
Overall Project Management:
Awards the team that demonstrates exemplary project management skills, including effective planning, resource allocation, risk management and execution, leading to successful completion of the team's project.
This accolade acknowledges the team's project manager for actively attending and engaging in Project Management Swimlane functions, effectively capturing the spirit of their assigned project management deliverables and expectations.
Best Team Collaboration Plan: Identifying a Vocational Partner
Recognizes the team with the most strategic and effective plan for identifying and working with a vocational partner, demonstrating clear objectives, mutual benefits and a strong partnership approach.
The winning recipient demonstrates outstanding proficiency in identifying and establishing a healthy relationship with a vocational partner, adeptly assessing resources, embracing diversity to strengthen its collaborative efforts, and ensuring alignment of missions and values, showcasing exemplary partnership strategies for the competition.
Best Team Collaboration Plan: Collaborative Norms
