Sponsor Spotlight: Thank You Bosch

Written by: Sydney Davis

Bosch, leading global supplier of technology and services, brings together comprehensive expertise in vehicle technology with hardware, software, and services to offer a complete mobility solution.

Bosch has provided four sets of eyes in the form of their Mid-range radar (MRR) sensors to EcoCAR teams. Each radar will be positioned to maximize the field of vision and thus information that can be obtained. These radars are located on Georgia Tech’s 2019 Chevrolet Blazer that the team has affectionately named Popy,

The first radar tracks objects and vehicles in front of Popy in conjunction with a camera, allowing the Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) system, to know when to speed up, slow down, or turn. Two radars will be placed on each rear corner allowing for a view of objects and vehicles on either side. The final radar will monitor objects and vehicles behind Popy.

The diagram above shows the impressive range of the team’s front-facing radars. The blue area depicts the long-range main antenna of the frontal radar while the red expresses the range of the elevation antenna that is used to generate an additional upward elevation beam. With the radars, GT EcoCAR will be able to see up to 160 meters in front of the vehicle and around 80 meters in the rear and sides. In addition to this field of vision, the rear radars will detect and alert if a vehicle within 50 meters is changing lanes.

Each Bosch MRR will work together to safely guide Popy towards the future of autonomous vehicles. Thank you to Bosch for the donation and sponsorship.
