Students of all ages who are studying STEM are paving the way for the future. From finding a cure for some of the world’s most devastating diseases, to creating artificial intelligence and perfecting the autonomous vehicle, Generations Y and Z are very likely to be the ones responsible for these incredible strides.
The students who are studying engineering at University High School in Morgantown, WV, are a prime example of STEM’s bright future and the amazing achievements to come.
In the fall, WVU’s EcoCAR 3 team visited this group of highly intelligent students to teach them more about hybrid vehicle technologies. They were excited to learn about the EcoCAR 3 competition and could not wait to see the Camaro once it arrived.
When it did, we invited the students to the team garage, and when they saw the Camaro on the lift, they lit up with excitement.
Our team gave the high schoolers a tour of the facilities and talked to them about our hybrid architecture. This served to see how much they remembered from our fall visit to their school and to refresh their memories about project specifics.
The students were tasked with labeling engine parts that would soon be integrated into our Camaro. This got them up and moving and allowed them to ask EcoCAR students about the components.
After finding and labeling the engine components, the team asked the UHS students to give their opinions about the EcoCAR 3 competition and whether or not they would consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle in the future.
We couldn’t let these prospective engineers leave without a souvenir photo with the Camaro! It was a wonderful way to document their visit, which is something both our team and student visitors will remember for a very long time.
