Thank you to all who tuned in to view the Year Two Virtual Awards Ceremony!
Now more than ever, it is important to come together and honor the extraordinary efforts displayed by the outstanding EcoCAR teams. We salute all of the students and faculty who have dedicated their time and effort over the last year to the EcoCAR program and the future of mobility, even in the face of adversity.
EcoCAR, which is the latest U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition sponsored by General Motors and MathWorks, challenges 12 North American universities to apply advanced propulsion systems, electrification, SAE Level 2 automation and vehicle connectivity to improve the energy efficiency of a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, all while balancing factors such as emissions, safety and consumer acceptability. Teams have four years (2018-2022) to transform their vehicles from design concept into reality, building an energy efficient, connected and semi-automated vehicle for the car sharing market.
After a year focused on integrating designs, we saw various winners crowned during the first ever virtual awards ceremony. Congratulations to West Virginia University who took home the award for Best Social Media Report; Ohio State University for placing first in both the Best Sub-System Design Report and Best Final Technical Report; the University of Waterloo secured the win for the MathWorks Model Based Design Award; Mississippi State University landed the Best Winter Workshop Project Status Presentation, and many more.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Paul Kearns, Director of Argonne National Laboratory, for offering a warm welcome to the Virtual Awards Ceremony. We would also like to thank keynote speakers Daniel Simmons, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy; Ken Morris, Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing & Supply Chain, General Motors; and Pieter Mosterman, Chief Research Scientist and Director of the MathWorks Advanced Research & Technology Office, for your words of guidance and encouragement to our teams.
