It’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day!

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) is a diversity outreach program designed to provide young female students with an opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) careers.

This year, IGED Keynote speaker was Lauren Tabolinsky, Academic Programs Manager for MathWorks. Tabolinsky shared her experience in STEAM, her career path, and gave an overview of the student competitions and programs, such as EcoCAR, that MathWorks supports. IGED attendees also learned more about Akshra Narasimhan Ramakrishnan, former EcoCAR Mobility Challenge participant who now works at MathWorks.

As Tabolinksy shared the importance of girls and women in STEAM, she left attendees with a final piece of advice, “Don’t give up.”

The IGED participants then heard from various Argonne employees about the projects they are working on in various STEAM fields, including Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) organizers, Trevor Crain and Armani Hrobowski. Crain and Hrobowski discussed the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge Program, Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), and the future of autonomous technologies. They shared EcoCAR student-produced educational materials to encourage interest and participation in STEAM.

Throughout the remainder of the day, these young female students will enjoy motivational presentations, connect with an Argonne mentor, and participate in large and small group activities that provide opportunities to learn about a number of STEAM careers.
